The Last Chalk - Nature Calling x Big Chalk

The Last Chalk

Big Chalk is a huge project playing a vital role in nature's recovery, covering 20% of England - including some of the Nature Calling hub locations. Matt Rosier, the commissioned artist for the Chilterns National Landscape, has written a blog for the Big Chalk website about the process of creating his project, Luton Henge.

Chalk and limestone landscapes are more than just habitats. They are living spaces where nature, culture, and community come together. Luton Henge, created by artist Matt Rosier, perfectly embodies that vision. Recognised as an approved Big Chalk project, it celebrates shared heritage, sparks connection, and inspires action for nature’s recovery.

A little girl of about seven is sitting on top of one of the wider Luton Henge standing stones - the stone is light grey. The girl is wearing dark shorts and a white t-shirt. Other people are sitting on the floor in the distance. The floor is made of compacted white chalk, part of the henge. There are trees in the background. Roo Lewis

Luton Henge was opened with an all day festival at the end of July.

In a guest blog for the Big Chalk website, Matt takes us behind the scenes of Luton Henge, sharing the story, ideas, and inspirations that brought this unique project to life. Covering the history of the site, the local chalk used for the henge, and the community involvement in the creation of the project and plans for the future.
