Big Chalk is ambitious and pioneering. The Big Chalk partnership is an ecosystem of more than 150 organisations with a common vision of thriving chalk and limestone landscapes across southern England. They are working together to create a resilient nature recovery network across 20% of England. At its heart are 12 National Landscapes including the Cotswolds, Chilterns and North Wessex Downs, the South Downs National Park and 8 National Trails.
Big Chalk represents the greatest opportunity to restore and reconnect nature in southern England, allowing the most wildlife to thrive and adapt to climate change. These chalk and limestone landscapes are culturally important and globally significant for their value to wildlife and are the natural reservoirs of clean water for much of the nation’s population. They could be central to the UK's pledge to protect 30% of land for biodiversity and halt the decline of species by 2030.
Thriving chalk and limestone landscapes protect historic heritage and water supplies, store carbon, enhance natural beauty and help improve health and wellbeing.
