The Mendip Hills are coming to Weston!

Experience the sights and sounds of the Mendip Hills in the heart of Weston this summer

Discover the sounds, stories and nature of Mendip from Monday 14 - Sunday 20 July in the Sovereign Shopping Centre, Weston-super-Mare (unit 31, close to the High Street entrance).

An empty shop in the Sovereign Shopping Centre, Weston is transformed into a unique, 360 immersive soundscape exploring the landscape, plants, people and wildlife of the Mendip Hills and Weston-super-Mare. The audio tracks through layers of time, soil, stone and roots to hear the ancestors of the caves, the dying song of the ash trees, the birds of the plateau. Hear the song of the ghost of Charterhouse, the tales of a Mendip storyteller, and the voices of children from Weston.

Young people from Weston enjoyed a caving adventure taking them underneath the Mendip Hills, experiencing the sounds, sights and textures as part of the development of 'View In View Out'.

Inspired by collaborative workshops with young people and community groups in Weston-super-Mare - held in the town and the Mendip Hills National Landscape - co-authors Gwyneth Herbert, Jason Singh and Chris Howard, with producers’ Sound UK and Super Culture, have created a new work, weaving participants’ responses into the sounds of Mendip wildlife, trees, plants and cave acoustics.

Sound artist Jason Singh has recorded sounds from across and underneath the Mendip Hills to create the soundscape.

Following the launch of the 'View In' installation and taking place throughout the summer, you can visit the Mendip Hills National Landscape and engage with an augmented reality (audio and animated illustrations) 'View Out' trail on Mendip. This experience will also be happening in Weston's South Ward.
