Applications invited for UK-France Study Bursary

If you are a young (35 and under) employee of a protected landscape in the UK or France, you might be interested in a £1000 bursary to support you to traverse la Manche and undertake a study visit!

The bursary can cover travel, accommodation and any other costs associated with the trip, up to the amount of the award; as for the place and the topic for study, that’s up to you. Your theme could be anything relevant to protected landscapes: biodiversity, climate change, health and wellbeing, social inclusion, recreation and tourism, farming and land management, involvement of communities…

Phil Holden
, manager of Shropshire Hills National Landscape and National Landscapes Association trustee, is behind the idea. He is about to undertake a 1000-mile bike ride across France, passing through 14 of the National Landscapes’ sister designations – the Parc Naturels Regionaux – from Saint Malo to Nice, and is using the trip to raise funds for the bursary. He has already raised over £1000, enough to cover one bursary, and he hopes to raise more as his journey progresses, so at least one more young person can access the opportunity.

Phil says of the bursary: “Protected landscapes are addressing climate change, nature recovery, social inclusion and working to achieve sustainability at the local level. Their ability to do this in future depends on nurturing the next generation of people working in them.”
