The Landscape Observatory launches new website with high resolution mapping of National Landscapes

High-resolution mapping will support informed decision-making and practical action across protected landscapes

The Landscape Observatory is a new project funded by the Protected Landscape Partnership, supported by Defra.

It will provide high-resolution AI generated maps for all protected landscapes, which will give teams better information to support decision-making and practical action across every National Landscape, National Park and National Trail.

The initiative aims to support teams tackling the country’s most pressing environmental challenges by uniting scientific research with on-the-ground knowledge. The first year will see AI maps developed for 10 National Landscapes, five National Parks and five National Trails; and progress national conversations on habitat condition monitoring and climate adaptation for management planning. Funded by the Protected Landscape Partnership and supported by Defra, the Landscape Observatory will serve as a central hub for researchers, policymakers, and conservationists seeking actionable, science-based insights.

“The Landscape Observatory is about connecting people and ideas to scale innovation and deliver real impact on the ground,” said Simon Geikie, Director of Observatory. “This new website will allow you to access insights, track progress and stay up to date with the project as the Protected Landscapes work together to shape the future of our landscapes.”
