'Every business depends on biodiversity, and every business impacts biodiversity'
A new report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (Ipbes), following last week’s IPBES12 conference in Manchester, makes one thing clear: every business depends on nature, and every business has a role to play in restoring it.
Our Chief Executive, John Watkins, who attended the event, said: “This report sends a clear signal to business leaders: acting for nature is cannot be optional, it’s fundamental to long-term resilience.
“Every organisation depends on healthy ecosystems, whether that’s clean water, natural flood management or resilient landscapes. The businesses that recognise this now and take action will be the ones best placed to thrive in the future.”
The report comes just days after the Climate and Nature Bill was voted down in Parliament and will not return for further consideration until July, highlighting both the urgency of the challenge and the important role businesses can play in driving progress alongside policy.
At the National Landscapes Association, we’re already helping to make that happen. Our Nature-based Solutions programme works with businesses to fund and deliver high-impact nature recovery projects that align with commercial goals and create long-term value.
Nature Minister Mary Creagh, also attended the event and said: “Nature is the monopoly provider of everything we need to exist. And there are no jobs on a dead planet. Nature underpins our economy - from the food we eat to the air we breathe. This meeting is a vital opportunity to turn global ambition into impact, both here in the UK and around the world.”
Earlier in January, Minister Creagh opened “Delivering for Nature, Together” the inaugural forum hosted by National Landscapes Association and National Parks Partnerships, which brought together senior leaders from business, finance, government and the environmental sector to look at how protected landscapes can work with the private sector to deliver large-scale nature recovery, climate resilience and social value.
Opening the forum, Minister Creagh said: “Our National Parks and National Landscapes are the living proof that investment in nature delivers tangible returns for all of us. These places are crucial assets: they underpin our national infrastructure. Investment in them benefits communities, businesses, and the planet. Our future prosperity depends on them. “
Hannah Wilcox Brooke, Head of Nature-based Solutions, said: “Nature loss isn’t just an environmental issue, it’s a strategic business risk that affects supply chains, operations and reputation.
“Many organisations want to invest in nature but find the landscape complex and fragmented. Our role is to make that journey simpler, connecting businesses with high-quality projects and managing the process so they can invest with confidence and deliver real impact.”
